Airspace World 2025 – your Tuesday highlights

29/04/2025

For those attending Airspace World on 13-15 May, in Lisbon, Portugal, one of the key attractions of the show is the programme of discussions, debates, and presentations that will be held in the event’s five theatres.

In the lead up to every Airspace World, the content team has created a schedule of events that tackles the numerous issues and challenges facing the ATM industry today.

This year’s conference themes focus on tackling the most pressing challenges, uncovering opportunities, and driving innovation to create a safer, more sustainable, and interconnected aviation ecosystem.

The 130 sessions, featuring around 330 speaker’s will cover an exciting array of topics based around eight key themes:

  • Innovation to Enable Future Skies
  • Optimised and Sustainable Skies
  • Pathway to Advanced Air Mobility (AAM)
  • Connectivity, Data Sharing and Cybersecurity
  • Strengthening Safety and Resilience in ATM
  • Higher Airspace Operations: Safe and Efficient Integration
  • Fostering a Thirving Aviation Community
  • Unleashing the Potential of Drones

You can see the full agenda here, where you can search by topic or speaker.

Here’s a pick of some of the highlights on day one of Airspace World, Tuesday 13 May

Collaborative Innovation in ATM: Building the Next-Gen System through SOA Architecture

Viasat Theatre – 10:00-10:25

This session will explore the groundbreaking collaboration between Tern Systems and Skysoft, two leading vendors in the Air Traffic Management (ATM) domain. Attendees will gain insights into how the adoption of Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA) is reshaping the landscape of ATM systems.

The speakers will delve into the joint effort to develop interoperable components that serve as building blocks for the next generation of ATM systems. By leveraging shared expertise and resources, this partnership is accelerating innovation and creating scalable, future-ready solutions for the aviation industry.

Speakers

Claude Levacher, CEO, SkySoft-ATM

Magnus Mar Thordarson, CEO, Tern Systems

Managing Summer 2025: Focusing on improving Pre-Tactical and Tactical Adverse Weather Management (EUROCONTROL)

SANS/NERA Theatre – 11:00-11:25

In summer 2024, weather-related events emerged as a significant challenge, causing 47 per cent of all ATFM delays between June and August. To address this issue, substantial improvements are necessary for the management of weather in the network for Summer 2025 and beyond. This will involve adopting a more network-oriented approach to weather management, to enhance the network pre-tactical plan to make better weather management at the heart of ATFM.

Join this session to find out the progress and preparations and expectations for the months ahead.

Speaker

Steven Moore, Head ATM Network Operations Division, EUROCONTROL

The Use of Artificial Intelligence and Robotics for Urban Airspace Design and Next-Generation UTM Services

Wing Theatre – 12:00-12:25

The rapid growth of drone (UAS) and Urban Air Mobility (UAM) operations in urban environments is pushing airspace management systems to their limits. In this presentation, speakers will share ongoing projects at ENAC Airbus Sopra Steria Drones and the UTM Research Chair that focus on innovative research in dynamic airspace design and advanced UTM services. Among several topics, recent achievements in data-driven airspace reconfiguration—using both machine learning and bio-inspired approaches—will be higlighted and speakers will discuss real-time and fast-time simulation techniques integrated with advanced UTM services for stress testing the overall system.

Speakers

Matthieu Verdoucq, Research engineer, ENAC

Meriem Oubelkass, Aeroline ATM Director, Sopra Steria

Murat Bronz, Head of drones and UTM research group, ENAC

Rodolphe Fremond, Research engineer, ENAC

Yannick Seprey, ATM-UTM expert, Sopra Steria

Executive Panel: Rising to the Challenge: Is Innovation Still the Right Path Forward?

Frequentis Theatre, 14:00-14:50

In an era marked by rapid technological advancements and growing environmental and safety concerns, the air traffic management (ATM) industry stands at a pivotal crossroads. This executive panel will convene visionary leaders to explore groundbreaking strategies and innovative solutions that will shape the future of ATM.

How can cutting-edge technologies be harnessed to enhance ATM operations and minimise environmental impact?
Is large-scale innovation still feasible, and who will finance it? Are we moving too slowly, or perhaps too quickly?
How can the industry better prepare and train its workforce to embrace automation and digital transformation?

Speakers

Claudia Bacco, Editor-in-Chief, Global Airspace Radar

Karl Wannenmacher, Chief Technology Officer, Frequentis

Maartje van der Helm, General Manager Performance & Development, LVNL

Mark Cooper, President and CEO, NAV CANADA

Peter Curran, Deputy Chief Executive Officer, Airservices Australia

Solving Air Traffic Flow and Capacity Management (ATFCM) imbalances in Complex airspace environment

Leidos Theatre – 15:30-15:55

The session will be executed through a presentation about the needs that triggered the study and implementation of solutions which support Flow Management Position (FMP) to reduce or solve imbalances, considering not only sectors’ loads but also air traffic complexity. Some practical examples will be provided with some views of a software which allow to identify solutions in terms of STAM on traffic or by changing airspace configuration also with a dynamic approach. References to SESAR activities will be provided together with next steps.

Speaker

Giuseppe Di Bitonto, Product Manager, ENAV Group
