AirNav Ireland Awarded Level 3 in CANSO’s GreenATM Environmental Accreditation

26/09/2024

Dublin, Ireland, September 26, 2024 – AirNav Ireland, the Irish Air Navigation Service Provider (ANSP), has successfully attained Level 3 in CANSO’s GreenATM environmental accreditation programme. This level of accreditation is awarded to air navigation service providers that are dedicated to minimising their environmental footprint and actively reducing emissions from the airspace users under their jurisdiction.

Launched in late 2022, the CANSO GreenATM initiative provides a robust framework for evaluating ANSPs’ achievements in environmental sustainability and operational efficiency. ANSPs are ranked across five levels, with each level representing progressively higher standards and goals for sustainability and environmental management, both in their facilities and within the airspace they control.

AirNav Ireland’s achievement underscores its strong commitment to adopting environmentally responsible practices. This accreditation particularly highlights the significant efforts made by AirNav Ireland in key areas such as:

  • Environmental Planning and Reporting
  • Facilitating continuous climb and continuous descent at Ireland airports
  • Free Route Airspace
  • Sustainable power procurement, and
  • Is an active participant in research aimed at improving ATM methods.

“Congratulations to AirNav Ireland for this milestone. I am impressed by the organisation’s work in delivering measurable environmental benefits for the entire industry,” said Simon Hocquard, CANSO Director General. “We are delighted to see an increasing number of ANSPs, including AirNav Ireland, reaching this level of accreditation. It’s a clear indication of the growing recognition and dedication within our industry to environmental sustainability and the pursuit of net zero carbon emissions by 2050,” he added.

Dr. Peter Kearney, CEO of AirNav Ireland, commented, “Achieving GreenATM Level 3 accreditation is a significant milestone for AirNav Ireland. This recognition validates the sustainable choices we have integrated across our organisation and within our air traffic management operations. As sustainability becomes ever more critical in the aviation sector, we are committed to making a meaningful and measurable contribution. However, our work doesn’t end here. As leaders in this field, we will continue to collaborate closely with our customers and partners to further enhance our sustainable practices.”

AirNav Ireland’s accreditation reflects its commitment to pushing the boundaries of sustainability within the aviation industry, serving as a benchmark for environmental initiatives. The GreenATM programme’s unified evaluation criteria for ANSPs worldwide is designed to benchmark current activities and encourage higher levels of environmental ambition and foster industry-wide collaboration on shared environmental goals.
