New courses mark second anniversary of ANSP Learning Portal

07/02/2025

As the second anniversary of the launch of the Infina ANSP Learning Portal (ALP), produced in partnership with CANSO, approaches, Infina has launched three new microlearning courses in its Runway Safety Series.

They are:

Stable Approaches In simple terms, an unstable approach occurs when an aircraft is too high and fast or too low and slow.  Research has determined that 66 per cent of approach or landing accidents or incidents had unstable approaches as the main causal factor. As unstable approaches are also a primary contributor to runway excursions, this microlearning course offers best practices to ensure an aircraft makes a stable approach.

Trainees will:

  • Identify criteria for a stable approach
  • Identify best practices to ensure an aircraft makes a stable approach

ILS Critical Areas and Precision Control Free Zone This microlearning course provides a scenario to demonstrate the importance of protecting the ILS, a designated ground area which must remain clear of aircraft and vehicle operations while ILS approaches are in use. This ensures the continuous integrity of the ILS signal.

Trainees will:

  • Identify the requirements for protecting the ILS critical area

Runway Intersection Operations The International Civil Aviation Organization lists runway incursions as one of the five highest-risks to aviation fatalities and that runway intersection incursions predominately arise from human errors. This microlearning course offers best practices for ATCOs to employ in mitigating these runway intersection incursion risk.

Trainees will:

  • Identify some of the most common causes of runway intersection incursions
  • Identify some best practices to help mitigate these events

These new courses bring the total number of courses available on the portal to 53, 18 of which are in Spanish. –

In support of its work, representatives of Infina recently attended the CANSO Latin America and Caribbean Conference 2024 in Trinidad and Tobago.

There they took part in the panel discussion “ANSP Initiatives for the New Generation of Workforce”  and discussed how  Microlearning is the best option for reaching  Gen Z and the younger workforce, especially when delivering Refresher and Recurrent Training.

Betty Stenaka, Programme Manager, Infina, said: “At Infina we believe the key question an ANSP should answer when addressing training is: How do you provide learning that is more in-tune with how the younger workforce learn and find content?

“It starts off with recognising and understanding how the young workforce learns and then, develops the training accordingly. We all know that young professionals have different learning styles and therefore absorb content in different ways. Traditional learning mechanisms and brick and mortar classrooms often are not relatable to younger generations of learners (and are just not scalable). In fact, one main purpose the new young workforce (Gen Z) use social media is to find content.”

Microlearning does not rely on traditional classroom attendance, can be accessed on-demand, at any time and can be scaled to include thousands of learners. In fact, multiple studies and research have demonstrated that microlearning’s effectiveness when it comes to Gen Z learners because it addresses the trainees’ key success factors.

  1. Greater Learner Satisfaction – Trainees have sense of self perceived autonomy and competence. Trainees own their learning, accessing what they need and when they need it.
  2. Improves Performance – Trainees need to implement specific skills that they don’t routinely use but, need to refresh their learning.
  3. Preference for Shorter Lessons – Trainees prefer Learning Management System that breaks their training down into shorter lessons.
  4. Improves Retention Significantly – Trainees improve retention by having their content presented in small chunks.
  5. Improves Accuracy and Confidence – Trainees felt accurate in performing their tasks and more confident completing their tasks correctly.
  6. Doing Better in Tests – Trainees did better in their exams overall versus standard teaching.
