GCAA to enter CANSO GreenATM Environmental Accreditation Programme
The General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) indicating its intent to participate in the CANSO GreenATM accreditation programme, which aims to enhance environmental responsibility across the aviation industry. The organisation will now pursue accreditation on the programme to showcase their commitment to sustainability.
The CANSO GreenATM programme offers air navigation service providers internationally recognised accreditation for their environmental initiatives. It evaluates the ANSP’s efforts to reduce its environmental impact and excess emissions by aircraft operating in its airspace. The accreditation process evaluates various aspects, including aircraft operations on the ground, arriving and departing in the terminal airspace, and in the enroute phase of flight, as well as infrastructure. Assessment is performed across five levels within the programme, indicating the effectiveness of environmental protection measures.
Ahmed Al Jallaf, Assistant Director of Air Navigation Services, UAE GCAA remarked on joining CANSO GreenATM Programme: “This step is a key milestone in our efforts to support the UAE Net Zero by 2050 Strategic Initiative. By embracing sustainable aviation practices, we aim to reduce our environmental footprint and set a regional benchmark for a greener aviation. Our commitment to innovation and responsibility is key to shaping a more efficient, environmentally-conscious future for the industry.”
“We are very happy and grateful to GCAA for their interest in the CANSO GreenATM programme. Their commitment represents a crucial step forward in achieving a more sustainable future for global air traffic management,” commented Simon Hocquard, Director General, CANSO. “GreenATM is quickly becoming an important measure of the robustness and effectiveness of ANSP environmental efforts.”
