Statement on fraudulent emails

23/07/2024

We are aware that a number of Members have recently received emails claiming to be from CANSO asking about payment of overdue invoices, including for Membership fees. These emails look and feel like a CANSO email, but are fraudulent.

CANSO will only ever email you from an @CANSO.org email account, and never from any public email domain, such as GMAIL.com, AOL.com Hotmail.com, outlook.com and so on.

If you receive any email looking like it is from CANSO but which does not have an @CANSO.org address, do not click on any links or attachments contained within it, and please forward it to Fraud.Reporting@CANSO.org.

Please also be aware that emails can be spoofed so that they look like they come from CANSO. However, you can tell whether an email is fake or not by checking the actual email address it came from, which will only ever be an @CANSO.org address.

Below is an example of a spoofed email. You will see that it purports to come from our Finance Director, Richard Hijnekamp. However, you will also see that the email address it came from is not an @CANSO.org address. This is one way to tell the email is false.

Here are more tips on how to spot, and avoid falling victim to, a fraudulent email

Thank you for your vigilance in this matter.
