Rohde & Schwarz, a global leader in Air Traffic Control communication announced that Collins Aerospace, an RTX business, has chosen the company to upgrade its Oceanic Communications network. This significant project will see Rohde & Schwarz supply a turnkey system based on its advanced CERTIUM communications suite, to replace Collins Aerospace’s existing high frequency transmitters and voice communications system.

The initial phase of the project will involve the installation of CERTIUM VCS, a state-of-the-art Voice over IP (VoIP) communication system at three locations, as well as two 5 kW High Frequency (HF) transmitters, equipped with modern, liquid-cooled amplifiers and field-proven R&S Series4100 HF radios. Future phases will continue to build out the communications infrastructure with additional equipment, ensuring a seamless and efficient upgrade process. The CERTIUM VCS solution is a reliable technology with over a decade of proven experience in the market, minimising integration risk and providing long-term support and service capability in the United States, close to the Collins Aerospace’s Annapolis, MD location.

The deployment of this system will enable Collins Aerospace to replace its legacy high frequency transmitters and voice communications system, while also gaining access to advanced capabilities and flexibility. The CERTIUM VCS solution allows for the integration of legacy analog radios, providing a phased upgrade path that aligns with Collins Aerospace’s operational and business requirements.

This project is underway and highlights Rohde & Schwarz’ ability to address industry challenges related to phased upgrades of legacy communications systems, providing a comprehensive and reliable solution as an end-to-end lifecycle supplier.

“We are proud to have been selected by Collins Aerospace to upgrade their Oceanic Communications network,” said Marius Münstermann, Vice President ATC at Rohde & Schwarz. “Our CERTIUM VCS and HF transmitter solution offers a proven and reliable technology, and we are committed to providing long-term support and service to ensure the success of this project.”
