IATA – CANSO joint webinar series: Strengthening ATM Resilience in a Changing World

14/05/2026

CANSO’s Nicki Harricharan, Operations Programme Manager, and Eduardo Garcia, Senior Manager Future Skies, preview a special series of webniars looking at strengthening ATM resilience around the world.

In an increasingly complex and unpredictable global environment, airspace disruptions are becoming more frequent, more diverse, and more impactful. From geopolitical tensions to emerging technological risks, the ability of the aviation system to anticipate, absorb, and adapt to disruption is critical.

To address these challenges, IATA and CANSO are launching a joint webinar series, bringing together airlines, air navigation service providers, regulators and industry partners to strengthen collaboration and enhance the resilience of the global air traffic management network.

The objectives of the series are to:

  • Foster global dialogue and shared understanding to support the integration of diverse airspace users and operational constraints.
  • Promote collaboration between airlines, ANSPs and key stakeholders
  • Identify practical solutions and best practices to enhance operational resilience
  • Support a more flexible, coordinated and adaptive ATM system

First Webinar – 25 June

Future Skies: Operationalising Space Transportation in Shared Airspace

Date: Thursday, 25 June
Time: 13:30 CEST (07:30 EDT)
Duration: 1.5 hours

As space operations expand rapidly, their interaction with aviation is becoming an increasingly important operational challenge. This webinar will explore how space transportation can be safely and efficiently integrated into shared airspace, moving from concept to operational reality.

The session will focus on:

  • Airspace deconfliction and coordination mechanisms
  • Safety considerations and operational risk management
  • Lessons learned from current operations
  • The evolution of ATM concepts to accommodate space activities

Bringing together stakeholders from across aviation and the space ecosystem, the discussion will provide practical insights, real-world experience, and emerging best practices to support the safe scaling of space operations within the global airspace system.

Upcoming Webinar | August

Geopolitics and Volatile Global Dynamics Impacting Airspace Access

The second webinar will address one of the most pressing challenges facing aviation today: the impact of geopolitical developments on airspace availability and operations.

The discussion will focus on:

  • Recent geopolitical developments and their impact on airspace access
  • Consequences for flight operations, efficiency and network management
  • The need for enhanced coordination, flexibility and real-time decision-making
  • Building resilience in an increasingly volatile global context.

Further details will be shared soon, including speakers and registration information.

Looking Ahead: Key Topics in the Series

This joint initiative will continue to explore the critical factors influencing the evolution toward an integrated airspace system, including:

  • Unauthorised drones near airports
  • Cyber threats impacting ATM systems
  • Interference with onboard systems (e.g. GNSS)
  • Extreme weather events

Working Together for Resilient Skies

Through this joint initiative, IATA and CANSO bring together the aviation ecosystem to strengthen coordination, share perspectives, and build a more resilient, adaptive and future-ready global ATM network.
