Regional Focus: The future skies of Africa – communications, navigation and surveillance (CNS) technology webinar

To continue with ensuring efficient ATM performance in Africa, CANSO held a second two-day webinar under the theme “The future skies of Africa”. This is is a follow up on the Future of Air Navigation event in February, at which we explored the future of African navigation systems looking at the uses and benefits for Africa. This series is also designed to help ANSPs identify both existing and emerging technologies, and their increasingly important role in the transformation of ATM. We invite you to join us as we look at Communication and Surveillance technologies and their role in the future skies of Africa.

The Aviation System Block Upgrades (ASBU) concept advances the ICAO Global Air Navigation Plan (GANP) (Doc 9750) with the goal of implementing regional aviation performance improvements. The concept focuses on four performance improvement areas: airport operations; global interoperable systems and data; optimum capacity and flexible flights; and efficient flight paths. The ASBUs outline air and ground equipment and timelines for standards and procedures implementation, and help to improve the efficiency, effectiveness and safety of air transport.

In line with ICAO and APIRG recommendations, CANSO is therefore committed to advancing ASBU implementation by addressing regional challenges and finding workable solutions.

CANSO has been working with ICAO on an ASBU implementation initiative since 2014, when an initial framework for implementation was laid out. While there has been progress since, implementation has been a challenge for ANSPs and is a key concern in the context of not only the impact of COVID- 19 pandemic but also the rising air traffic both domestically and internationally during recovery.

We heard from Aireon, Frequentis, Indra,  Inmarsat, SkyWare Labs, Thales and more, on the Future skies of Africa and the technology that will take you there.
