Regional Focus: ICAO/CANSO/AIRBUS webinar on aviation cybersecurity implementation – Air Traffic Management Cybersecurity Policy Template

Technology and cyber-systems are now essential to modern society and air traffic management. Many of our day-to-day activities in our control centres and towers as well as our home lives are now dependent on information technology.

It’s hard to argue against the benefits such technology brings to air navigation service providers and safety but any such conversation also has to address the potential risks arising from the insecurities of that technology.

With the increasingly global nature and interconnectivity of our aviation and safety technology systems, cyber threats and cyber-attacks have an increasingly international component and effect. What’s more the growing complexity of cyber security risks impacts on our industry at national, regional and international levels.

The ICAO Assembly Resolution A40/10 Addressing Cybersecurity in Civil Aviation, ICAO looks to support States and industry in the adoption of the cybersecurity strategy and ensure that cybersecurity matters are considered and coordinated through the appropriate mechanisms.

With that in mind, CANSO, International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and AIRBUS, is providing a series of events addressed to States and Air Navigation Service Providers (ANSPs).

This second session (you can see the first one here) took place over three days and  supported the development of policies, procedures and the implementation of mitigating measures to address cybersecurity issues in aviation systems.

Working with the new Air Traffic Management Cybersecurity Policy Template, the session:

  • Explained the cybersecurity policy
  • Supported cybersecurity implementation and reporting
  • Supported the development of national cybersecurity manuals

The webinar was for cybersecurity experts, cybersecurity points of contact, and anyone responsible for cybersecurity activities within their organisation.

The Air Traffic Management Cybersecurity Policy Template can be found here.
