ATNS Retains Level 2 in GreenATM Environmental Accreditation Programme

08/06/2026

Johannesburg, South Africa, Monday 8 June 2026 – Air Traffic and Navigation Services (ATNS) SOC Ltd, South Africa’s air navigation service provider (ANSP), has successfully retained its Level 2 recognition under the Civil Air Navigation Services Organisation (CANSO) GreenATM environmental accreditation programme.

Introduced in 2022, the CANSO GreenATM programme provides a structured framework for evaluating an ANSP’s progress in environmental sustainability and operational efficiency. The programme comprises five levels, each reflecting progressively higher standards of environmental performance and sustainability across both airspace operations and ANSP facilities.

ATNS strengthened its Level 2 standing by demonstrating consistent progress across multiple focus areas and earning an additional 13 points. This advancement reflects notable improvements in several key areas, including:

  • Meteorological information (MET): Following a reassessment, ATNS achieved full points in this category by clearly demonstrating the availability of MET tools for tactical operations, as well as established procedures for integrating meteorological information into both strategic and pre-tactical planning.
  • Airport Collaborative Decision-Making (A-CDM): Additional points were secured through continued collaboration between ATNS and airport stakeholders, aimed at effectively managing disruptions and peak traffic periods.
  • Air traffic management (ATM) efficiency: Ongoing initiatives, including the implementation of an operational efficiency programme, demonstrated measurable improvements in ATM efficiency.
  • Organisational culture: ATNS was commended for its continued efforts to embed environmental sustainability into its organisational culture, encouraging staff participation in environmental initiatives and strengthening internal capacity.

ATNS is also a founding member of the Green Aviation Insights (GAIN) programme, led by the National Air Traffic Services in the United Kingdom, which seeks to enhance global collaboration in reducing aviation’s environmental footprint. The programme focuses on developing a shared data and analytics platform tailored for ANSPs to measure airspace efficiency and support sustainable air traffic management.

CANSO Director General, Simon Hocquard, acknowledged the achievement, stating: “ATNS has reached an important milestone with their Level 2 accreditation in our GreenATM programme. Their efforts to adopt more sustainable practices demonstrate a genuine commitment to reducing aviation’s environmental impact. We are delighted to recognise this achievement and to support their continued progress.”

ATNS Acting CEO, Matome Moholola, emphasised the significance of this milestone, noting that maintaining Level 2 status reflects the organisation’s long-standing commitment to environmental sustainability, a journey that began in 2013.

“As global focus intensifies on reducing environmental impact and addressing climate change, participation in this programme validates ATNS’ commitment to sustainable practices. It has also provided valuable insights into areas where we can further strengthen our environmental initiatives. We remain dedicated to collaborating with industry partners and airspace users as we work towards a more sustainable aviation future,” said Mr Moholola.

The CANSO GreenATM programme continues to encourage ANSPs worldwide to enhance environmental stewardship and collaborate on shared sustainability objectives.
