Preparations for the upcoming International Civil Aviation Organization 42nd Assembly begin

The CANSO ICAO Affairs office has begun preparations for the upcoming International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) 42nd Assembly which will take place 23 September to 3 October.

Spotlight on the ICAO Assembly

The ICAO Assembly is the highest decision-making body of ICAO. Taking place once every three years, the Assembly brings together 193 Member States and key international organisations to shape global aviation policy.

During these sessions, ICAO reviews its technical, economic, legal, and cooperative work programmes in detail, ensuring that international aviation continues to evolve efficiently and safely. The Assembly will approve the new version of the Global Air Navigation Plan (GANP). The outcomes of the Assembly set the course for ICAO’s initiatives and guide Member States in their implementation of international aviation standards, in line with Article 49 of the Chicago Convention.

CANSO’s Role at ICAO

As the voice of airspace, CANSO actively participates in the ICAO Assembly, alongside other associations such as the Airports Council International and the International Air Transport Association. Assemblies are a crucial opportunity for CANSO to contribute to the discussions that will define aviation’s future. By submitting and commenting on working papers, CANSO helps shape policies that ensure aviation standards remain effective, practical, and implementable.

Stay Updated on Assembly Activities

The CANSO ICAO Affairs Work Group (IAWG) is where CANSO Members discuss and debate the positions CANSO will take at the Assembly. The IAWG will hold regular meetings leading up to the Assembly, meeting weekly as September draws closer and hundreds of working papers need to be reviewed.
