Regional Focus: Understanding Trajectory Based Operations (TBO) and Activities in Asia Pacific
This webinar aimed to raise our awareness of Trajectory Based Operations (TBO) in general, and specifically in Asia Pacific, to evolve the current air traffic management (ATM) towards TBO.
As air navigation service professionals, we have all heard of TBO. It is a key part of ICAO’s Global Air Navigation Plan (GANP) and it is going to happen.
But what is it exactly and how do we start its implementation?
We know that current ATM practices are not scalable to meet the future demands of aviation. TBO is potentially the application that will transform the way we do ATM today.
TBO will achieve better optimisation of airspace capacity and increase throughput and fuel efficiency, through better information sharing and collaborative decision making.
Some of its technical enablers can seem daunting and TBO may seem like a distant dream. However, the Asia Pacific region has made great progress in ATFM through the multi-nodal distributed approach, which is founded on information sharing and collaborative decision making.
CANSO Asia Pacific offers a readymade platform for exchanges of ideas and collaborations. The region can leverage on this to take a step-by-step approach towards TBO.
As they did with ATFM, a few ANSPs in the region have started a trial on TBO, and this webinar offers us a chance to catch up on what is happening.
