Regional Focus: Emergence of Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems Integration, Benefits and Hazards

From aerial surveys, infrastructure inspections, deliveries and emergency response to research, RPAS are changing the way we live and work. To thrive in this environment, ANSPs need professionals who understand the possibilities and challenges posed by RPAS with increasing levels of autonomy and new applications (or use cases) yet to be discovered. ANSPs need to embrace the challenges and benefits the emergence promotes to plan and train towards its integration.

With the proliferation of RPAS within our airspaces, it is necessary to determine the risk of collision with other RPAS or manned aircraft. This webinar addressed the major challenges within the industry, including interoperability, autonomy, airspace integration, communications, RPAS education, training, and regulation. In addition, Unmanned Aviation System Traffic Management (UTM) concept was explained to enable participants to acquaint themselves with the impact of RPAS on ATC operations.

Finally, the webinar addressed the integration of RPAS/UTM into existing ATM Systems. The benefits/advantages of Geo-Fencing, the risks of operation into controlled airspace and the hazards posed by recreational, uneducated and unlicensed operators.

Our objectives were to help participants:

  • Understand the risks and potential consequences of loss of separation between RPAS or RPAS and manned aircraft
  • Address RPAS operational issues likely to impact the control of manned aircraft
  • Understand the risks of loss of control of an RPAS and the Command Center
  • The dangers in intentional operation of RPAS into restricted, controlled or prohibited areas
  • Understand how to fully integrate RPAS/UTM into existing ATM Systems
  • How weather affect RPAS Operators
  • Training and licensing of operators
  • Broaden their perspective and knowledge on the potential of RPAS technology in the aviation industry
  • Safety culture among RPAS operators
  • Learn from facilitators with the real global, industry, organisational and research experience
