Beyond the Pandemic: Collaborating for Safe and Sustainable Operations – A CANSO Operations and Safety Workshop
As the impact of the global pandemic becomes more manageable, it is time for Africa’s regional experts in Air Traffic Management safety and operations to meet in person again, to discuss and agree on the way forward for safe and sustainable operations.
In the last two years, CANSO Africa members have spent a significant amount of time using virtual platforms to share information, exchange lessons and assist one another in maintaining safe and sustainable operations. However, the COVID-19 pandemic has raised new questions for the ANSPs and the Industry at large, including:
- What will we need to do differently to ensure safe operations?
- What will change in our operational environment?
- How do we enhance safety while providing efficient operations for airspace users?
- What are the future focus areas for the workgroups?
- What can the safety and operations workgroups achieve together?
- How do we collaborate with other agencies and partners?
CANSO Members agreed that, in 2022, there was a need for a face-to-face meeting where ideas can be exchanged and full workout sessions can take place with clarity of positions, conclusions and action plans.
Zambia Airports Corporation Limited (ZACL) agreed to host the workshop. The regional experts and workgroup members were invited to this in-person workshop from 9-12 May 2022 in Lusaka, Zambia.
Our event, which is aimed primarily at CANSO Member organisations and those who are part of CANSO Africa‘s Safety and Operations programmes, will be a structured back-to-back workshop for the workgroup members. The workshop will allow the two workgroups to identify and share synergies during the opening plenary session, explore their plans and objectives in more detail using breakaway sessions, and consolidate their individual and joint conclusions in a closing plenary. While the organisers will make every attempt to provide hybrid arrangements for the plenary sessions, workgroup members are strongly encouraged to attend in person, as the breakout sessions on day two will not be covered virtually.
