Thomas Mickler

Chief Advisor – Innovation

European Union Aviation Safety Agency

Since October 2023, Mr. Mickler has served as EASA’s Chief Adviser for Innovation.

Previously, he was Head of EASA’s International Cooperation Department, where he focused on fostering global partnerships to enhance aviation safety, support the free movement of products and services, and promote European and international safety standards.

From August 2014 to August 2021, Mr. Mickler was based in Washington D.C. as EASA’s Representative to the USA working closely with the FAA, the NTSB and other U.S. key aviation stakeholders.

Earlier, he served as Head of Standardization at EASA, working with the European Commission and Member States to implement aviation safety regulations and ensure a high, uniform level of safety across Europe.

Before joining EASA in 2009, he held several senior roles at the German Ministry of Transportation, including Director of Air Operations, Personnel Licensing, Accident Investigation, and Aviation Safety Programmes. He oversaw the German Luftfahrt-Bundesamt (LBA) and the German Accident Investigation Body (BFU).

From 1998 to 2004, Mr. Mickler served as a member of the Air Navigation Commission and Alternate Representative of Germany to the ICAO Council.

Earlier in his career, he was a Project Certification Manager at the German LBA, leading national and international type certification projects for transport aircraft.

Mr. Mickler holds a Master of Science in Aerospace Engineering from the Technical University of Braunschweig, Germany, earned in 1990.
