Regional Focus: EUROCONTROL/CANSO Standard of Excellence in Safety Management Systems Measurement Questionnaire

The CANSO Standard of Excellence in Safety Management Systems (SoE in SMS) supports ANSPs with building, implementing and improving their Safety Management Systems (SMS) in accordance with international standards and regulations, including International Civil Aviation Organization’s (ICAO’s) Annex on Safety Management (Annex 19).

The SoE in SMS is linked with the annual EUROCONTROL/CANSO Standard of Excellence in Safety Management Systems Measurement Questionnaire. 2020 marks the tenth anniversary of this collaboration, which contributes to establishing a global level for safety based on the highest standards. It helps participating ANSPs better understand the drivers and benefits of safety management system (SMS) maturity, track key and emerging trends and enhance aviation safety performance for all airspace users.

In this session we will provide an overview of the SoE in SMS, the benefits of participating for both ANSPs and the global safety community, an overview of the 17 elements, and illustration of how to use the questionnaire. It will kickoff the Africa Safety Webinar Series, in which we will address key safety topics tailored to the region.
