HENSOLDT – Premium Sensors for Air Traffic Control and Military Identification – Friend or Foe
HENSOLDT is an independent, globally leading supplier of premium sensors for security and surveillance missions. The company is active throughout the world in such areas as missile warning systems and submarine periscopes. Moreover, HENSOLDT is very active in the market for radar systems, optronics and electronic protection systems. The company comprises the security and defence electronics activities of the Airbus Group, which were spun off from the group in 2017 and have now entered the market as a new sensor house under the brand name of HENSOLDT. HENSOLDT employs approximately 4,000 employees, generating annual revenues of about €1 billion.
For decades, HENSOLDT has supplied air traffic control and identification systems in the military and civilian sector to customers worldwide. Amongst others, the company equips the German Armed Forces’ airports with the ASR-S (Airport Surveillance Radar, S-Band) airport surveillance radar and delivers a complete approach control system for the military airfields in Switzerland. The German air navigation service provider DFS Deutsche Flugsicherung has awarded HENSOLDT a contract to deliver primary and secondary ATC radars. Together with Leonardo, HENSOLDT upgraded the identification systems of more than 450 land, sea and air defence platforms to the new “Mode 5” standard. The Royal Canadian Airforce and the Australian air traffic control authorities rely on the company’s latest development in this area, the ASR-NG (ASR Next Generation) which offers the ability to mitigate wind farm effects. Other ATC radars are under contract in countries such as France, USA, Bulgaria and the Philippines.
