CANSO and ASD call for increased funding for SESAR

26/07/2024

ASD and CANSO Europe have jointly called for greater funding for the Single European Sky Air Traffic Management (ATM) Research programme (SESAR). SESAR is the technological backbone of the Single European Sky initiative, aimed at enhancing ATM performance by modernising Europe’s ATM network with innovative technological and operational solutions.

SESAR’s strategic importance is evident in its role in advancing the EU’s digital and climate goals. By modernising ATM, SESAR enhances passenger safety, increases capacity, improves cost efficiency, reduces delays, optimises airline operations, and delivers significant environmental benefits. Ultimately, SESAR aims to enable the most efficient and sustainable ATM operations across Europe and beyond.

The active participation of Air Navigation Service Providers (ANSPs) and their partners in the manufacturing industry is crucial. These stakeholders are responsible for the planning, deployment, maintenance, and operation of critical ATM infrastructure. Their involvement ensures that technological innovations are practical, feasible, and aligned with aviation sector needs.

Continued EU funding and political support for SESAR are essential. This funding accelerates the deployment of SESAR technologies, fostering collaboration, digitalisation, and reduced climate impact. Increased funding will ensure that SESAR continues to benefit society by improving the efficiency and sustainability of air traffic management.
