CANSO Safety and Operations Forum 2020
CANSO held its inaugural Safety and Operations Forum 2020 in November. The new forum offered a platform for the exchange of thought leadership on the joint challenges our industry faces, and the solutions we can drive forward together.
Bringing experts together to tackle shared issues and advance the Air Traffic Management industry is at the heart of what we do as CANSO. In these times of crisis, and beyond, this brand new forum offered a common space to share and connect ideas for improvements in safety and operations, all in support of securing a safe, efficient and sustainable future.
Those who attended shared ideas on how to navigate the current situation, gained insight into key developments to watch, exchanged leading best practice and connected with CANSO’s safety and operations communities around the world.

How automation in aviation and air traffic management can contribute to improved safety, efficiency and sustainability
Experts from LFV and Linkoping University discussed compelling research into how automation in aviation and ATM can contribute to improved safety, efficiency and sustainability. Attendees learned how computers and drones cooperate in traffic management areas and about the move from segregation to integration of ATM/UTM.
The session also discussed ways to improve key performance indicators (KPI) through the use of continuous descent operations (CDO), and how Covid-19 has contributed to KPIs.
› Billy Josefsson, Head Automation & Human Performance, LFV
› Valentin Polishchuk, Associate Professor, Air Traffic Management Research, Linköping University
Moderator: Coleen Hawrysko, Operations Programme Manager, CANSO
Contingency planning, business continuity and organisational resilience
With pandemic outbreaks seemingly happening more frequently it is vital that organisations ensure that the lessons learnt from COVID-19 can be employed in the future. In the past 17 years, for example, the world has had to deal with COVID-19, Ebola, MERS, SARS, swine flu, and bird flu with at least three of those impacting air travel.
The current pandemic demonstrates how crucial successful contingency planning and business continuity is for organisations’ resilience. In this panel session we discussed those responses to this pandemic, the lessons learnt and approaches taken to ensure changes to contingency and recovery plans are implemented and tested.
› Urs Lauener, Chief Operating Officer, skyguide
› Desmond Whitty, Executive Director of Safety Quality & Environment, Saudi Air Navigation Services (SANS)
› Klaus Affholderbach, Chief Safety and Security Officer, skyguide
› Gary Lloyd, Principal Consultant, Helios
Moderator: Shayne Campbell, Safety Programme Manager, CANSO
Human factors importance during the pandemic – safety and operations complexity
The importance and value of the human element to ATM has never been so apparent. The resilience of operational personnel, their mental health and stress management, and management of change are just some of the topics that need to continue to be in the forefront.
Among the many things the pandemic has uncovered is that a gradual shift from ATC to ATM will happen much more quickly. During this transition, safety has to remain a key focus. This session discussed many of the human performance aspects CANSO Members are managing, and offered unique insights from some of the top Human Factors professionals in the ATM industry.
› Guadalupe Cortes Obrero, Human Performance Manager, ENAIRE
› Miguel Caparros Ruiz, Head of Training, FTEJerez
Moderator: Shayne Campbell, Safety Programme Manager, CANSO
Rightsizing organisations following the pandemic
Without question, COVID-19 has had an unprecedented impact on CANSO Members, both on the ANSP and supplier sides. Many organisations have gone through extensive resource reduction programmes to manage the new realities facing the industry, and challenges still remain that will forever change the ATM landscape.
This session discussed some of the challenges of managing interdependencies between operational priorities and safety responsibilities, embracing automation solutions, and explored the use of new technologies for longer term use, all taking into consideration how ANSPs can optimize the operational and safety efficiencies of advanced tools that have become prominent during the pandemic.
› Doug Davis, Director of Airworthiness, Northrop Grumman and CANSO Operations Standing Committee (OSC) Vice-Chair
› Sinead McCloskey, Sr. Director Safety Assurance and Service Operations, Aireon LLC and CANSO Safety Standing Committee (SSC) Vice-Chair
Moderator: Huw Ross, Managing Director, To70 UK
