CANSO Africa Conference 2016

CANSO – the global voice of air traffic management – was pleased to invite air navigation service providers and ATM industry stakeholders to attend the 4th CANSO Africa Conference, which was held in Accra, Ghana from 12 – 14 September 2016, kindly hosted by the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority.

The Conference theme was Ensuring Safe and Efficient Airspace – Separating Regulation from Service Provision. It focused on the separation between regulation and service provision, as well as on institutional change. The Conference also focused on the key priorities for air traffic management in Africa: matching equipage with the Aviation System Block Upgrades; showing how sovereignty need not be a barrier to providing air traffic services across borders; improving efficiency through collaborative decision-making; and enhancing safety through implementing safety management systems, the SEANS-Safety programme and the Africa ANSP Safety Initiative.

Following the CANSO Africa Conference was a two-day Safety Seminar entitled Incident Investigation in a Just Culture

The two-day seminar was lead by safety experts from the United State’s Federal Aviation Administration. Sessions included: an overview of Just Culture, an overview of a Safety Management System, voluntary safety reporting and policy changes needed for Just Culture. Day two focused on an introduction to ATS incident investigation, with a focus on incident investigation in a Just Culture. The workshop also taught how to prepare for an effective interview and effective questioning and listening techniques.
