CANSO Academy: Increasing Environmental Ambition and Ensuring Accountability with CANSO’s GreenATM Accreditation Programme
With the States of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) recently agreeing to a net zero 2050 goal for international aviation emissions, and with many States having their own domestic climate goals, the aviation industry is in the spotlight when it comes to sustainability. All parts of the industry, including air traffic management (ATM), are expected to take action to contribute to reducing emissions, and aviation’s environmental impact.
The good news is that many of the many of the ATM solutions necessary to deliver efficiency gain and reduce emissions already exist. However, we need to deploy current solutions and best practice on a wider scale.
The CANSO GreenATM Programme is an environmental accreditation programme that provides air navigation service providers (ANSPs) with an independent, industry endorsed accreditation of their environmental efforts. It’s designed to highlight the positive action being taken, raise awareness of sustainability and the actions needed to improve it, and drive improved environmental performance.
Through the programme, ANSPs are assessed with respect to the actions they are taking to reduce their direct environmental impact, as well as their efforts to facilitate the reduction of emissions by airspace users. The programme’s 24 topics and five accreditation levels can serve as a valuable guide for ANSPs who want to improve their environmental and sustainability performance and for dialogue with ATM stakeholders on critical sustainability issues.
This webinar was held to help ANSPs determine:
- why the GreenATM Programme was established
- the benefits of participating in an environmental accreditation programme
- how to participate in the GreenATM Programme
- how submissions will be assessed and scored
It will also enable ANSP environmental and operational staff to get answers to their questions about the programme.
